Member Services Manager-Great Kansas City (Part-Time)

Job Description

In 2021, Philanthropy Missouri unveiled a new name reflecting our commitment to serve statewide. Focusing initially on Greater Kansas City, the Members Services Manager - Greater KC will work with active team and Board support to build and cultivate a network of grantmakers interested in advancing a more collaborative and purpose-driven philanthropic sector. This position will also contribute to PhilMO’s statewide impact through Member services and resource cultivation.

The Members Services Manager - Greater KC will:

  • Work collaboratively with a small, nimble team eager to accomplish great things.
  • Work occasional early morning and evening hours to support Board, Member, and community events.
  • Demonstrate an eagerness to learn and commitment to continuous quality improvement. 
  • Exercise sound, expert, independent judgment to manage time and honor the organization’s policy guidelines.
  • Ensure a high level of accountability through consistent and appropriate translation of work-related activities into progress reports.
  • Utilize tact, objectivity, and sensitivity in managing stakeholders. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diversely-identifying prospective Members, current Members, community organizations, PhilMO Board and committee volunteers, and other PhilMO team members.

Title:  Members Services Manager - Greater Kansas City

Reports To:   Vice President

Where:  Primarily based in Greater Kansas City as a fully remote position

Hours: 18-20 hours per week with an opportunity to expand hours after 9-15 months

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Community Outreach & Member Prospecting – 50% of time

  • Activate a network of grantmakers in Greater Kansas City by recruiting new PhilMO Members. Expansion beyond Kansas City possible.
  • Contribute to and report out on organizational strategies for Member recruitment.
  • Engage and connect with the existing PhilMO Members in Greater Kansas City, including current Board and committee leaders, and develop new partnerships with other organizations working to support regional philanthropy and community-based, participatory grantmaking.
  • Steward relationships, connections, and information-sharing among Members, other Missouri grantmakers, and various regional and statewide stakeholders.

Member Development - 20% of time

  • Support Program staff in designing and hosting programs and collaborative meetings in outreach footprint. (Note: many PhilMO meetings are virtual for inclusive access; support is expected primarily for in-person meetings held regionally.)
  • Respond to Member requests for resources and support; map, maintain, and visually present data to provide insight and awareness about community needs, current and ongoing regional funding by foundations, government agencies, and others.
  • Keep a pulse on regional Member needs to inform programming and services.
  • Engage and clearly communicate with grantmakers via PhilMO’s online tools and contribute content to Member Communications (including website,  e-newsletter, and annual report).

Fundraising - 15% of time

  • Work with CEO and VP to implement a statewide business model that includes Member Dues, program sponsorship, grants, and earned income to support PhilMO’s operations and impact.
  • Contribute to identifying relevant grant opportunities, crafting compelling proposals, and managing the application process. 

Sector Learning, Research, & Reports – 10% of time

  • Maintain familiarity with sector literature and the evolving landscape of philanthropy, development, and nonprofit management.
  • Staff sector and topical research projects as needed. 

Miscellaneous- 5% of time

  • Provide staff support for special projects or activities as needed. 
  • Engage actively in strategic planning and team development.
  • With supervisor, identify and pursue meaningful individual professional development.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Attitude:

  • Enthusiasm for PhilMO’s mission, vision, and values. Commitment to strengthening the philanthropic sector in Missouri.
  • Adept and invested in developing new and existing relationships to build strong and strategic partnerships among a diverse set of grantmakers and other stakeholders.
  • Curiosity for learning and growth mindset. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and cultivating inclusion across identities, beliefs, and lived experiences.
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail balanced with capacity to navigate the unexpected.
  • Agile self-starter who knows how to prioritize, focus, and get things done, tackling challenges along the way. Ability to work problems independently and arrive at viable solutions upon receiving initial direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of flexibility, organization, tenacity, ethics, diplomacy, humor, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Willingness to travel statewide on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Prior experience in recruiting, sales, fundraising, and/or advocacy roles in and/or serving Greater Kansas City.
  • 2 or more years of experience working with grantmakers, nonprofit service providers, or intermediary organizations serving the nonprofit sector.
  • Nuanced understanding of the field of philanthropy (e.g. corporate social responsibility, charitable giving, impact investing, etc.) and critiques of the sector.
  • Prior experience in group facilitation and programs is a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for implementing team technology to advance Member and resource development. Comfortable using Google Workspace and Cloud-based file sharing and storage (we currently use Egnyte). Experience with databases/CRMs a plus (we currently use GrowthZone).
  • Prefer access to reliable personal transportation.

Compensation

  • Salary.
    • $27-31/hour, depending on hours and experience
    • Part-Time positions do qualify for annual increases and paid time off
    • If desired, this position may be designed as a contract role (vs. part-time staff)
  • Flexibility in Work Schedule & Location. This position is fully remote and based in Greater Kansas City. We prefer employees work at least 51% of the time in Missouri with some exceptions possible (e.g., Kansas). Generally, we seek for our team to work when and where they are most productive. Team collaboration and outreach meetings included in this role will require some “traditional” working hours.
  • Holidays & Time Off. To support team members in taking excellent care of themselves and their families, we complement our flexible work schedule with at least 15 paid holidays and paid time off (PTO). Full-time PTO begins at 15 days annually; part-time PTO is prorated based on hours (e.g., 20 hours/week begins at 7.5 days annually).
  • Professional Development. As a learning organization, we invest in the development of each employee. All team members are expected to engage in – and may propose – team and individual learning opportunities.
  • Community Engagement. Paid time is allocated monthly for team members to serve in community-facing volunteer capacities. Service is optional and self-directed; it must align PhilMO values and nonprofit status (e.g., partisan political work is not eligible).
  • Travel & Expenses. Pre-approved work-related expenses, including travel and technology equipment, will be directly paid or reimbursed.
  • Retirement. 3% of salary contributed by PhilMO into a retirement account annually (optional employee contribution). All employees are eligible after 1,000 work hours.
  • Insurance (Full-time Only). 80% health, dental, vision, and 100% life premium coverage for full-time employee. 50% coverage for dependents. Coverage can begin a minimum of 30 days past first day of full-time work. 
  • Contractor vs. Employee. As the work landscape evolves, PhilMO seeks to be nimble to recruit and retain the most capable and committed team. If you prefer to work as a contractor, please indicate this preference in your initial interview.
