Network & Learning Manager (Part-Time)

Job Description

The Learning & Network Manager cultivates meaningful connections and active learning among PhilMO Members and partners. This position assures PhilMO programs and services (including Funder Networks) are well-coordinated and align with broader association strategies. PhilMO approaches Member learning collaboratively, with most team members contributing to ideation and supporting components of execution. Our Network & Learning Manager leads the way –  assuring implementation, coordinating team contributions, and evaluation. Review our 2024 Annual Report (pages 9+10) for a sense of current programs and services. 

Title:  Learning & Network Manager

Reports To:   CEO

Supervises: No direct reports to start. If interest and capacity to supervise are demonstrated, it is likely possible within a year.

Where:  Metro St. Louis preferred, and all Missouri candidates will be considered.

Hours: 25 hours/week with opportunity to grow to full-time in 12-18 months

Be Advised: PhilMO is growing to better serve its statewide footprint. This role is prioritized for growth through additional hours and/or hiring additional staff (the path to build capacity will be shaped by the Learning & Network Manager). 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Learning & Network Manager:

Program & Services Management – 45% of time

Manage (with support from the PhilMO team; see Overview above) ideation, development, implementation, and evaluation of 30-50 virtual and in-person programs for PhilMO Members and partners annually, including one in-person statewide conference. This team member will:

  • Coordinate annual program calendar and, with CEO and Operations support, draft a proposed annual budget for programs and assure compliance to the final Board-approved budget.
  • Ensure programs are responsive to the evolving philanthropic and statewide landscape.
  • Draft and edit program descriptions and fliers; oversee dissemination of invitations with Operations team support.
  • Produce agendas, facilitation guides, slides, and other materials for programs.
  • Directly communicate and/or manage team communication with guest speakers, facilitators, hosts, and participants. 
  • Coordinate day-of activities, including setup and break down, and post-event activities, including evaluations, acknowledgments, and website updates.

Network Management – 25% of time

Oversee the cultivation of PhilMO Member Networks, which regularly convene Missouri grantmakers by type of organization, funding interest area, geography served, and personal identity. Additional PhilMO staff, including the CEO and Vice President, provide support in strategic planning for Networks. The Learning & Network Manager will:

  • Design and deliver high-quality programs and services for Networks (included in Program & Services Management (detailed below). 
  • Manage the Network annual calendar and ensure participants are kept informed of Network activities through timely communication.
  • With the PhilMO team, identify and support volunteer Network Member-Advisors in providing peer leadership to Networks (typically two advisors per Network serve for one or more years). 

Partnerships & Collaborative Communications - 20% of time

  • Draft and publish a regular Member e-newsletter (What Gives?).
  • Work with Operations team to ensure program-related data and information is kept up to date across online platforms.
  • Participate actively on the PhilMO team, including engaging in regular staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with PhilMO CEO.
  • Set agenda for and co-facilitate quarterly Programs & Services Board Committee meetings.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with other PSOs and sector stakeholders.
  • Attend community meetings and provide staff support for collaborative projects.

Sector Learning, Research, & Reports –10% of time

  • Respond to Member inquiries and requests. Track the team’s collective work to respond to Members’ requests for customized research. 
  • Maintain familiarity with the landscapes of philanthropy, development, and nonprofit sector.
  • Ensure a high level of accountability through translation of work-related activities into progress reports for staff and Board of Directors.

Miscellaneous- 5% of time

  • Produce special reports and/or contribute to special projects as needed.
  • Engage actively in strategic planning and team development.
  • With supervisor, identify and pursue meaningful individual professional development.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Attitude for Learning & Network Manager:

  • Enthusiasm for PhilMO’s mission, vision, and values. Commitment to strengthening the philanthropic sector in Missouri.
  • Excellent project management and event planning skills, including delegation and oversight of delegated tasks. Able to shift priorities to keep the big picture and strategic goals in mind.
  • Curiosity and passion for learning and growth-centered operating principles.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and cultivating inclusion across identities, beliefs, and lived experiences.
  • Superb time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail balanced with capacity to navigate the unexpected.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including editing.
  • Ability to work problems independently and arrive at solutions after initial direction.
  • High ethical standards, discretion, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Ability to learn new technology and adapt to changes. 
  • Willingness to travel statewide as needed to support the network required; prefer access to reliable personal transportation. Ability to work occasional early morning and evening hours.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills for Learning & Network Manager

  • Experience evaluating program effectiveness and organizational impact.
  • 4 or more years of experience working with grantmakers, nonprofits, or intermediary organizations serving the nonprofit sector.
  • Nuanced understanding of the field of philanthropy and critiques of the sector.
  • Experience and skill in public speaking, basic graphic design (we currently use Canva), and facilitating in in-person, virtual, and hybrid formats. 
  • Enthusiasm for implementing team technology to advance Member and resource development. Comfortable using Google Workspace and Cloud-based file sharing and storage (we currently use Egnyte). Experience with databases/CRMs a plus (we currently use GrowthZone and MailChimp). 
  • Ability to lift or move up to 20 pounds as programming needs require (please also see Commitment to Inclusion, below). 
  • Being based in or near Philanthropy Missouri headquarters in St. Louis, MO.

Compensation

  • Salary.
    • $28-31/hour, depending on hours and experience
    • Part-Time positions do qualify for annual increases and paid time off
    • If desired, this position may be designed as a contract role (vs. part-time staff)
  • Flexibility in Work Schedule and Location. Within the context of each team member’s responsibilities, we support them working when and where they are most productive. We request employees work at least 51% of the time in Missouri, with some exceptions possible. For this position, team collaboration and hosting programs will require some “traditional” working hours. All Missouri applicants will be considered; the preference is for this team member to St. Louis-based and work from PhilMO headquarters (5501 Delmar Blvd, Suite A310, St. Louis, MO 63112) at least once a week. 
  • Holidays & Time Off. To support team members in taking excellent care of themselves and their families, we complement our flexible work schedule with at least 15 paid holidays and paid time off (PTO). Full-time PTO begins at 15 days annually; part-time PTO is prorated based on hours (e.g., 20 hours/week begins at 7.5 days annually).
  • Professional Development. As a learning organization, we invest in the development of each employee. All team members are expected to engage in – and may propose – team and individual learning opportunities.
  • Community Engagement. Time is allocated monthly for team members to serve in a variety of community-facing roles. Some roles may not be possible due to PhilMO’s nonprofit status and conflict of interest policies.
  • Travel & Expenses. Pre-approved work-related expenses, including travel and technology equipment, will be directly paid or reimbursed.
  • Retirement. 3% of salary contributed by PhilMO into a retirement account annually (optional employee contribution). Employees are eligible after 1,000 work hours.
  • Insurance (Full-time Only). 80% health, dental, vision, and 100% life premium coverage for full-time employee. 50% coverage for dependents. Coverage can begin a minimum of 30 days past first day of full-time work.
